11__8 Iron Bridge Old Bridge in Durham, North Carolina

It is an ordinary elevated railroad designed in the 1920s and completed in 1940, and trains still run well today.

But why did this bridge become a problem?

It is in the part that says 'Designed in the 1920s and completed in 1940'.

At that time, the height of the cars was not very high, so it was built at 11 feet and 8 inches (about 3.6 m), but the problem was that as time went on, the cars started getting taller, and as the construction law was revised, the bridge became less than tall.

But when we repair it, there is a track where trains pass by every day, and the water and sewage pipes pass right below it like a beggar, so it is impossible to dig the bottom or lift the top.

So don't go out in the city hall. didn't work

The problem is that this is a passage that you can go straight through at the crossroads, and if you avoid it, you have to go around a few hundred meters more.

Delivery trucks often used the road without thinking. As a result, only the lid of the truck was gnawed.

If you hit it, the car will be destroyed, and the height-limited structure will also bend, resulting in continued costs.

As the bridge maintenance cost continued to be added at the city hall, we considered reconstructing the bridge.

For the reasons written above (rails and pipes), it was overturned and blanked out.

And above all else, the Transportation Bureau decided that the maintenance cost of the continuously bending height-limited structure would be less than the cost of building a new bridge, so the Department of Transportation gave up.

So, if there were many situations where only the poor big daughters were torn from the cost of repairing the truck, it happened once or twice a day.

However, as this bridge became famous on the Internet with the nickname “Can Opener”, the city hall took measures to make sure that it was terrifying.

Right away, a laser height meter, a large electric sign, and two more signs were kindly installed to warn the truck to turn sideways if it is high.

result?

as is

Because the results are still like this, the Ministry of Transportation rolls around, saying, “Oh fuck how do you solve this?” and chooses the result of “The train route will be cut during the construction period, but the track will be raised.”

So, in October 2019, at a construction cost of about 500 million won, the track was lifted and the bridge was raised by 8 inches (about 20 cm).

However, the nickname “Can Opener” is still alive and well.
